Criterios de Entrada y Salida
If information obtained during the enrollment process indicates that a language other than English is the primary language of the student and/or his or her family, the student is evaluated to determine his/her level of English language proficiency. Students in kindergarten through grade 12 are evaluated for listening, speaking, reading and writing competency.
The state-adopted evaluation assessment is the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA). The results of this language assessment are used to determine whether a child will benefit from the services provided through the English Language Development(ELD) program. A Parental Notification and Consent form is sent home as students qualify.
All students identified as English Language Learners (ELL), whether they are in the ELD program or withdrawn by parents, are re-evaluated annually to determine their progress in learning English. All assessment results are available to parents through the child's ELD teacher. Students who score an overall "Proficient" on the AZELLA are exited from the ELD program. A Reclassification form is sent home to parents regarding their child's exit status.
These procedures are implemented in accordance with ARS 15-751-756.
English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)
English Language Learner Program Services
The English Language Development (ELD) program services include classroom instruction planned and delivered by certified teachers trained in SEI strategies. At some sites, ELD students may also receive support from the school's SEI-trained, ELD support teachers who collaborate to meet each student's needs.
Please note: If a language other than English is the primary language spoken by your child or your family, please make sure this is indicated on the school Enrollment Form and Home Language Survey. Thank you
"The overall goal is for ELL students to become fluent English proficient in a period
'not normally intended to exceed one year'. "

English Language Development/Structured English Immersion programs are available for grades K-12 at all schools.
Students whose home language is not English, will take the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) test upon entering school to determine their English language proficiency in Reading, Writing and Speaking. Their results inform the school and teacher in differentiating instruction to best meet the language needs of the student. Each spring, all English Language Learners will take the AZELLA reassessment to measure their language progress and they will continue reassessing each year until their skills have reached proficiency.
The English Language Development (ELD) program is designed to promote student success in school by providing instruction in the development of listening, speaking, vocabulary, reading, writing skills and grammar in the English language. To ensure that all students in the program learn English as quickly as possible, and to comply with Proposition 203 regulations, all ELD instruction in the Destiny School is taught in English.
Information regarding students' academic progress is distributed to parents quarterly in the form of progress reports and report cards. Those parents or guardians wishing to review their child's progress in meeting academic standards or to receive information regarding his/her English proficiency should contact the classroom teacher

English Language Learner Program
Participation
The Arizona Department of Education’s language framework is build on the Language Development Approach (LDA) which follows 4 principles:
Principle 1 – Asset-Based Behaviors and Expectations
Destiny School teachers will emphasize the linguistic resources and cultural knowledge our English learners brings with them to the school environment.
Principle 2 – Integrated Instruction in Disciplinary Language and Content Destiny School teachers will design content instruction that integrates language and literacy development driven by AZ content area standards in tandem with AZ English Language Proficiency standards. This must occur in an integrated setting with mainstream students.
Principle 3 – Targeted and Explicit Language Instruction
Destiny School teachers will design explicit targeted language instruction driven by new 2019 AZ English Language Proficiency standards that provides students with an understanding of how language functions within different content areas. English Learners must be separate from mainstream students during this time.
Principle 4 – Assessment, Monitoring, and Feedback
Destiny School teachers will use the 2019 AZ English Language Proficiency standards, district English Language Development assessment practices, and summative assessments to measure the progress of English learners’ language and content knowledge.
